| 概要 | Mechanoreceptors are densely distributed in mammalian whisker follicles, each exhibiting distinct structures and responses during whisking. To characterize Ruffini-like endings, we performed multiscale morphological analyses using FIB-SEM, micro-X-ray CT, and serial reconstructions. These endings are located at the cavernous sinus level beneath the glassy membrane and form extensively branched two-dimensional networks. Axon terminals, ensheathed by terminal Schwann cells, are embedded in dense collagen fibers, surrounded by a fibroblast-rich framework with associated elastic fibers. Reconstruction revealed a complex microenvironment resembling a “collagenous ocean.” In addition, fiber tracing showed compact bundling of trigeminal afferents at the nerve root. These findings provide insight into how peripheral nanoscale information is organized for transmission to the brain. |
